Plantside Vegan Yorkshire Puddings – No more missing out!

Plantside opened their vegan cafe in February 2020, which swiftly closed as the first lockdown kicked in

Once Anna, the head chef at Plantside, had perfected the obligatory lockdown sourdough she set about creating something amazing for their customers to come back to - the perfect Vegan Roast Dinner.  Most items on a roast can easily be veganised, but the elusive element which social media users far and wide are united about is a decent Yorkshire Pudding.  It’s notoriously difficult to make a vegan version that comes out as anything other than a savoury cake, and almost impossible to cook them with a hole (without smashing a spoon into boiling hot oil and soggy batter mix!).

It took seven frustrating weeks using almost every imaginable combination of flours, plant milks and egg replacers before the new product was finally born. A light and crispy top, denser bottom to soak up the gravy combined with the all-important hole! During this time Anna’s partner Keith had the incredibly tough job of taste testing and grading the results - he can confirm the final product is really rather good!

Upon reopening the cafe, the verdict was clear:

Cafe customers started asking if they could buy extra Yorkshires to take home for their freezers.  Then a couple of people further afield asked if they could have some posted to them. Then quite a lot more people started asking for them!  So many that the teenage members of the Plantside family had to get in on the label-sticking and packing action. All of a sudden hundreds of happy vegans had perfect roast plates all over the country, some weren’t even bothering with the rest of the roast and just having the magnificent puds with gravy as a snack!

Fast forward two and a half years, sadly the Plantside cafe had to close due to staffing difficulties and economic conditions, but the team now make 1000’s of Vegan Yorkshire Puddings every week from their new purpose-built kitchen. These are not only stocked in shops all over the country but are also sold to other cafes and restaurants too. A completely unpredicted, but amazing and tasty win from chaos that was the pandemic!
